FAQ’s

Everything you need to know about our garden rooms, the design process, planning and installation.

Design

  • While we do not currently offer a completely soundproof solution for our garden rooms, we do offer a noise reduction pack that can help to reduce the transmission of sound through the walls, floors, and ceilings of the garden building. This pack includes sound-reducing insulation, a sound-reducing membrane, and acoustic glass. The insulation and membrane work together to effectively reduce the transfer of sound to approximately -45db, while the acoustic glass helps to reduce the transmission of sound through windows and doors. However, it is important to note that the acoustic glass is the least effective component of the noise reduction pack, and the more glass is included in your garden room, the less effective the pack will be at reducing noise. If you have any questions about our noise reduction pack or would like more information, please don’t hesitate to contact us.

  • Yes, we can provide a complete electrical connection from your house to your garden room as an added service. This option is available at an additional cost, which will be confirmed during your design consultation. The electrical connection will ensure that your garden room has a reliable power source and can support any electrical devices or appliances that you plan to use. If you prefer, you are also welcome to arrange for your own electrician to handle the electrical connection. This is a common choice for people who have a preferred electrician or who want to take a more hands-on approach to the project. No matter which option you choose, it is important to ensure that the electrical connection is properly installed and meets all safety standards. This will ensure that your garden room is a safe and comfortable space to use.

Interior design ideas for garden rooms are as varied as the people who own them. You can try something contemporary, or go for a classic rustic chic. Alternatively, you can use our interior design service – the choice is yours.
  • Choose from stunning charred ebony, or classic western red cedar. You can choose from Charred Ebony or Western Red Cedar cladding installed vertically on the front of your garden room*. Our modern-looking Charred Ebony cladding is produced from the finest slow-grown Siberian Larch, a naturally durable wood sourced from sustainable forests. Our Western Red Cedar Cladding is equally as beautiful, sustainable and high performing. Slow grown in the Pacific Northwest of Canada, it’s sourced from leading sawmills that are PEFC™ certified. *If you’d like your choice of timber cladding on the sides and back of your garden room as well, you can upgrade from the metal rhino cladding offered as standard.
  • When it comes to the electricity supply for your garden room, there are a few things to consider. Firstly, it’s important to make sure that the building site has a suitable power source, such as a nearby electrical socket, or a source of outdoor power. Next, you’ll need to decide what type of lighting and electrical fittings you would like to have in your garden room. This could include ceiling lights, wall lights, plug sockets, and even air conditioning units. Our team can advise you on the best options for your garden room and ensure that the electricity supply is installed to meet your needs. In some cases, it may be necessary to install an additional electrical circuit or to upgrade your existing electrical supply. Our experienced technicians will be able to advise you on the best course of action and ensure that the installation is carried out to the highest standards, in accordance with the relevant electrical regulations. Please note that any additional electrical work required for your garden room will be charged as a separate cost, so it’s important to factor this into your budget. If you have any concerns about the electricity supply for your garden room, our team will be more than happy to answer your questions and provide further advice.
  • Four stunning options to choose from. Your choice of high-quality and durable laminate flooring in smart oak, tawny chestnut, white-washed or chestnut oak. Whatever style you choose to complete the individual look of your garden room, it’s meticulously finished with painted MDF skirting boards:
    • Smart Oak: The wood-grain pattern and texture creates the appearance of genuine timber, offering stunning depth and character. This, alongside its classic look, ensures it blends with any décor.
    • Tawny Chestnut: This timeless chestnut tone introduces character and warm organic textures to your garden room and works particularly well with a muted colour scheme.
    • White Washed: A great choice for enhancing a stripped-back neutral look, or lightening up darker and bolder colour schemes. These white-washed floorboards nicely ‘open up’ smaller rooms and their striking pale grain detail evokes organic charm in rural and Nordic themed rooms. The matt finish is easy to wipe clean, whilst the laminate material ensures it is low maintenance.
    • Chestnut Oak: When you want a darker floor to complement your garden room, this rustic chestnut oak style is a great choice. The deep and warm embossed finish works well with both dark and pale walls.
  • We install high-quality Aluminium doors and windows. They are very secure with a multi-point locking euro lock system and a set of keys, extra available on request. The main choices of doors and windows are
    1. Bi-folds
    2. Sliding
    3. French with sides
    4. Pencil windows
    5. Corner windows
    6. Roof lanterns

We can also supply the best quality bespoke bi-fold hardwood doors, these are made to order and require a longer lead time.

Construction

  • Yes, we can install partition walls in any of our larger sized garden rooms. Please enquire for more details.
  • Absolutely; they’re designed for use 365 days a year no matter what the weather! All our buildings are insulated with industry-leading insulation and double-glazed doors and windows. The insulation is placed into all elements of the building – the floor, the walls and the ceiling to ensure excellent thermal retention.
  • NO -THEY DO NOT COME APART! Our buildings are designed and built to last for a lifetime as high performance, permanent buildings.
  • Firestone EDPM is our standard roof option. It gives an excellent waterproof barrier to your garden roof structure and is specially designed for flat or low-sloped roofs. It is a durable rubber roofing membrane which is used worldwide. It has a life expectancy of more than 50 years with a 25 year weather security guarantee. For clients looking for green roof to blend in with their garden, there are two main choices, a sedum roof or a wild meadow roof. It sits on top of an EDPM roof, and is a great way to finish your garden room. From an aerial perspective, sedum roofs blend with your garden, are environmentally-friendly and give great insulation.
  • Foil-backed plasterboard, plastered and skimmed.
  • The answer is yes. A foundation is a crucial component of a garden room as it provides the structure with stability, security, and prevents any unwanted movement or settling. At Into The Garden Room, we highly recommend that all garden rooms be installed on a suitable foundation, whether it’s a concrete slab, a paved surface, or a foundation made of blocks or bricks. The type of foundation that’s ideal for your garden room will depend on various factors such as the size of your garden, the type of soil, and the intended use of your garden room. Our team of experts will evaluate your garden and provide you with the best recommendations for a foundation that meets your specific needs. This way, you can have peace of mind knowing that your garden room is built to last and withstand the elements. In addition to providing stability and security, a strong foundation also helps to prevent moisture and damp from affecting your garden room. This is especially important as moisture can cause serious damage to the structure over time. In conclusion, a foundation is an essential component of any garden room, and at Into The Garden Room, we believe that a solid foundation is key to ensuring that your garden room is safe, stable, and secure. If you have any questions about the foundations for your garden room, please don’t hesitate to contact us.
  • All our Garden Rooms are built using Structural Insulated Panels (SIPs) or when access is restricted or some larger sized rooms with multiple internal walls we will build using Timber Frame construction.
  • SIPs out-perform other building methods in virtually every thermal and structural category because the insulation is a component of the system, rather than an addition. As a consequence, they have exceptional thermal performance and u-values (drastically reducing your heating and energy bills) and making SIPs a truly environmentally friendly option.
  • Our Premier Range rooms come with a stylish wall-mounted Milano Aruba vertical slimline electric radiator in white or anthracite grey for year-round comfort and economical on-demand heating. Ideal for rooms that don’t have access to central heating pipes, the Milano Aruba radiator is an eco-friendly choice that can be controlled remotely via the Terma BlueLine heating app thanks to its Bluetooth-connected heating element. For our signature and bespoke rooms, we work closely with you to scope out the best and most cost-effective way to heat your garden room that can include:
    • Underfloor heating
    • Wall mounted radiators or electric heaters
    • Dual air conditioners/heaters
    • Free-standing oil filled radiators
    • Log burning stoves
  • Garden rooms that are less than 15 square metres (m²) in size will need a minimum of 400mm from the external walls of the building up to any boundary. Boundary rooms that are greater than 15m² require a 1m gap from a boundary, fence, building, garage or tree to comply with current fire safety regulations.

Maintenance

  • When it comes to maintaining the beauty and durability of your garden room, proper treatment of the cladding is an important consideration. If you’ve chosen cedar as your cladding material, you may be wondering whether or not it needs to be treated. The short answer is that cedar is naturally resistant to rot, decay, and insect damage, which means that it doesn’t require the same level of maintenance as other types of cladding. However, there are a few things you can do to protect your cedar cladding and keep it looking its best for years to come. At Into The Garden Room, we recommend treating your cedar cladding with a high-quality oil or stain to help protect it from the elements. This will also enhance the natural beauty of the cedar, giving your garden room a warm, inviting appearance. If you’re not sure what type of treatment is best for your cedar cladding, our team of experts is here to help. We’ll work with you to determine the right treatment for your garden room, taking into account factors such as the local climate and your personal preferences. So, whether you’re looking to preserve the natural beauty of your cedar cladding or simply want to ensure that it lasts as long as possible, our team has you covered. Contact us today to learn more about treating your cedar cladding and how we can help you keep your garden room looking its best.
  • All our garden rooms come with 10-year structural & 20-year roofing guarantees for ultimate peace of mind. Plus, the rubber (EPDM) roofing system has an expected life of 50-years, backed by a 20-year guarantee.
We believe in only using the highest, most durable materials for our garden rooms, therefore meaning a ITGR garden room will also come with a life expectancy of a minimum of 25 years. ITGR garden rooms are built for life, whether it be a home office for you now, or guest accommodation later.

  • Because of naturally occurring chemicals in the wood, there’s no need to treat external cedar cladding. As with all-natural products, cedar cladding will age and change appearance over time. In most areas of the UK, this will mean untreated cedar cladding will weather to a dark grey colour. You can if you wish to use stains, preservatives and other wood treatments for cosmetic reasons. The original colour of external cladding can be maintained by treating it with a UV blocker

  • Your building will require no maintenance at all unless you wish to oil your timber cladding. This oiling is not necessary and is a personal preference, but it will help prevent oxidation, which turns the timber a silvery grey. Cleaning the garden building with a hose, water and brush is enough. If you have trees nearby the guttering at the rear will need clearing on occasions. Other than this though there is no maintenance required. If you want to oil your building we recommend a UV protective oil.

Planning

  • Garden rooms do not typically require building regulations approval. However, if you want a larger garden room that goes over the specified size limits, planning permission will be required. If you have a listed property, the requirements are stricter. If your property is in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, you may also need approval before putting up a garden room. We’ll always make sure your building meets the regulations. Whether a small one man office or a large annexe building, we consider everything. Where a building requires inspection and sign off (mainly with larger buildings) we deal with it for you, engaging with the council or an approved building control contractor to provide all required paperwork. There are dedicated fees for this service and we discuss these with you at all the various stages.
  • If you do not want the hassle of applying for planning permission, your garden room must meet specific requirements. As well as the maximum size, you can only build a garden room that is up to 50% of your garden’s total area, which includes your front garden. It must also not be used as a permanent bedroom. There are also some specific requirements for listed properties and those in Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Please ask if you would like further information.
  • Like any type of garden building, a garden gym does not require planning permission as long as it meets specific requirements. Garden gyms are permitted developments, but your garden gym should be no larger than 10m x 10m, the eaves should be a maximum of 2.5 metres high, the overall height should be under 4 metres with a dual pitched roof or 3 metres with any other roof. If it is located within 2 metres of a property boundary, it should have a maximum height of 2.5 metres.
  • You can build a garden cabin without planning permission as long as you make sure it is under 10m x 10m in size, and it does not go over 3 metres in height in most cases, or 2.5 metres if it is located within 2 metres of the property’s boundary. Most of our garden cabins are within these specifications so you do not require planning permission.
  • When it comes to installing a bespoke garden room, there are several legal and regulatory requirements to consider, and one of the most important is planning permission. Whether you need planning permission for your garden room depends on a variety of factors, including the size of the building, its location, and its intended use. At Into The Garden Room, our team of experts has extensive experience in navigating the planning permission process. We will work with you to assess your needs and help determine whether or not you need planning permission for your garden room. In general, planning permission is not required for small, single-story garden rooms that are not intended for permanent habitation and are located within the boundaries of your property. However, if your garden room is larger, taller, or closer to a boundary, planning permission may be required. For example, the overall size of the garden room must be no larger than 10m x 10m, and the eaves must be no higher than 2.5 metres. If you live in a conservation area, you would need to build behind the rear elevation of your house for the garden room to fall under permitted development. If planning permission is necessary, our team will guide you through the application process, providing all the information you need to make an informed decision. We’ll make sure the process is as straightforward and stress-free as possible, so you can focus on getting the garden room of your dreams. Contact us today to learn more about the planning permission requirements for your garden room or get a quote today.

  • A high-quality garden office or garden room may add up to 15% to the value of your property. Garden offices are desirable, and many homebuyers will find them appealing. However, there is no guarantee that a garden office will add value to your property because its value depends on many factors. ““

  • Absolutely! While sheds might be a bit small, when you order a garden room from us, you can use it for almost any purpose, including a garden gym. Our garden rooms are strong enough to be used for gym equipment, and we can even fit out your room with a changing room and shower if you want.

Process

  • No, all our quotations are fixed. However if we cannot fix grind escrows or solid bases this may require other construction methods and possible extra prices. We’ll only ever ask for more if you need extras.
  • Our average garden room build time is 20 working days, however this will depend on any additional services you require.  As we use structurally insulated panels for our garden rooms, the actual construction part of the garden room is relatively quick and easy. For larger, more intricate garden room projects, that may involve plumbing in bathrooms or kitchens as well as electrics and media equipment, a bespoke timeline would be required. Many clients choose to have their garden landscaped or paving added after the garden room has been constructed, which would also require extra time. Why not book a free site survey with our ITTGR team to guide you through the process, provide you with a quote and an idea of timings for your garden room project.
  • We do not offer the option to purchase a garden room directly from our website. Instead, you can use the website to research the range of designs available and get inspiration for your own garden room. Then you can either get a quote by filling out the form or contact us to find out more.
  • Our order form holds all the information you need. There are no hidden charges or fees. What is on your order form is what you pay. Should there be any changes to the specification during the build process, or unknown charges are incurred for unforeseen circumstances they will be discussed with you, the client, never just added to the bill.
  • We do this to allow customers to know exactly what they are purchasing at a glance with no hidden surprises.
  • Absolutely; we’ve built countless bespoke garden rooms that meet the individual requirements of our clients. These have included wheelchair-friendly rooms, hot tub garden buildings, sauna and wet rooms, soundproofed garden rooms for musicians, hobby rooms, home offices and gyms. Our design team will be happy to discuss your requirements as part of your free no-obligation quote.
  • You can place your order directly to one of our experts who can help with your building selection and also advise on finance options.
  • Following receipt of your order, we will correspond with you throughout the process via email. This includes the delivery of documentation, installation date selection, payment reminders, etc. It is important that you follow the instructions on each email after you have placed your order. We do supplement these emails with text reminders. We ONLY send text reminders to prompt important emails. In some instances emails can be located in your SPAM filter, so it is important to check BOTH your inbox and Spam filters. We will not send you marketing via SMS and following the successful installation of your building you are able to unsubscribe from ITTGR emails.

We offer finance options. With our complete package, you can be sure that you’re getting everything you need to build your dream garden room, all in one convenient and affordable package.
