FAQ’s
Everything you need to know about our garden rooms, the design process, planning and installation.
Design
- Yes, we can easily include dividing walls or separate rooms in your bespoke garden room. We can create entirely separate rooms within your garden building using partition walls. These can be connected via a door, or you may want each room to only be accessible from outside. You can use these separate spaces for a wide range of purposes. For example, they may be useful if you require an extra area for the storage of tools, cycles, garden machinery or anything else. Or you might wish to create a separate room for working and one to relax in.
- While we do not currently offer a completely soundproof solution for our garden rooms, we do offer a noise reduction pack that can help to reduce the transmission of sound through the walls, floors, and ceilings of the garden building. This pack includes sound-reducing insulation, a sound-reducing membrane, and acoustic glass. The insulation and membrane work together to effectively reduce the transfer of sound to approximately -45db, while the acoustic glass helps to reduce the transmission of sound through windows and doors. However, it is important to note that the acoustic glass is the least effective component of the noise reduction pack, and the more glass is included in your garden room, the less effective the pack will be at reducing noise. If you have any questions about our noise reduction pack or would like more information, please don’t hesitate to contact us.
- You certainly can install a wood burner in your garden room. In fact, a wood burner is a great way to create a cosy space inside your garden room. Because of the smaller size of garden rooms, you will be limited in terms of the size of wood burner you can install. Keep in mind that smaller burners tend to be more efficient, which will save you money. In addition, local regulations apply that determine the type of burner that can be used in some areas. In most cases, a log burner will also require a 2 metre external flue and a hearth to protect the flooring system.
- At Into the Garden Room, we offer a full bespoke service and can create a custom-sized building to meet your specific needs and preferences. Whether you have a small or large garden, we have the expertise and resources to design and build a garden room that fits your space and budget. In addition to our custom service, we also offer a wide selection of standard sizes and styles of affordable garden offices to choose from. With so many options available, you can find the perfect garden room to suit your tastes and requirements. We can build up to 30 square metres internally to stay under full building regulations. The smallest building we offer in our range is 2m x 2m. If you have any specific questions about custom sizes or would like to discuss your options in more detail, please don’t hesitate to contact us.
- Unfortunately, we do not offer the installation of solar panels on our garden rooms at this time. However, there are many other ways to make your garden room more energy efficient and eco-friendly. For example, you could consider adding insulation to the walls, roof, and floor to help regulate the temperature inside the building and reduce your heating and cooling costs. You could also install energy-efficient windows and doors, or use LED lighting to reduce your energy consumption. These are just a few of the many options available for making your garden room more sustainable. If you have any questions about ways to improve the energy efficiency of your garden room, please don’t hesitate to contact us.
- Our garden rooms are constructed to meet high engineering standards, similar to those used in building houses. While this means they do have good acoustic properties, they are not completely soundproof. If you are planning to use your garden room for activities that generate significant noise levels, such as band practice or similar, we can provide options to improve sound performance. During your free design consultation, our team can discuss options such as sound-reducing insulation, acoustic glass, and other acoustic materials to help deaden sound and reduce noise transfer. We understand the importance of ensuring that our garden rooms meet the specific needs of each customer, and we are committed to working with you to find the best solution for your particular situation.
- Our garden rooms are freestanding, but we can build as close as 500mm to any existing structure (including your fence or house!).
- Yes we do, and we work with several partners. This work will need to meet the requirements of the Building Regulations and may mean that you need planning permission. If you need a water supply we’re happy to organise through our specialist partners to chat to your plumber of choice. Just remember that this will need to meet Building Regs and might mean you need to get planning permission.
- Four stunning options to choose from. Your choice of high-quality and durable laminate flooring in smart oak, tawny chestnut, white-washed or chestnut oak. Whatever style you choose to complete the individual look of your garden room, it’s meticulously finished with painted MDF skirting boards:
- Smart Oak: The wood-grain pattern and texture creates the appearance of genuine timber, offering stunning depth and character. This, alongside its classic look, ensures it blends with any décor.
- Tawny Chestnut: This timeless chestnut tone introduces character and warm organic textures to your garden room and works particularly well with a muted colour scheme.
- White Washed: A great choice for enhancing a stripped-back neutral look, or lightening up darker and bolder colour schemes. These white-washed floorboards nicely ‘open up’ smaller rooms and their striking pale grain detail evokes organic charm in rural and Nordic themed rooms. The matt finish is easy to wipe clean, whilst the laminate material ensures it is low maintenance.
- Chestnut Oak: When you want a darker floor to complement your garden room, this rustic chestnut oak style is a great choice. The deep and warm embossed finish works well with both dark and pale walls.
- Yes, they’re so well insulated that they can be used throughout the year. All our garden rooms benefit from the thermal expertise we use to build our houses, and also come with a heater for those rare snowy days!
Construction
- The answer is yes. A foundation is a crucial component of a garden room as it provides the structure with stability, security, and prevents any unwanted movement or settling. At Into The Garden Room, we highly recommend that all garden rooms be installed on a suitable foundation, whether it’s a concrete slab, a paved surface, or a foundation made of blocks or bricks. The type of foundation that’s ideal for your garden room will depend on various factors such as the size of your garden, the type of soil, and the intended use of your garden room. Our team of experts will evaluate your garden and provide you with the best recommendations for a foundation that meets your specific needs. This way, you can have peace of mind knowing that your garden room is built to last and withstand the elements. In addition to providing stability and security, a strong foundation also helps to prevent moisture and damp from affecting your garden room. This is especially important as moisture can cause serious damage to the structure over time. In conclusion, a foundation is an essential component of any garden room, and at Into The Garden Room, we believe that a solid foundation is key to ensuring that your garden room is safe, stable, and secure. If you have any questions about the foundations for your garden room, please don’t hesitate to contact us.
- When it comes to the electricity supply for your garden room, there are a few things to consider. Firstly, it’s important to make sure that the building site has a suitable power source, such as a nearby electrical socket, or a source of outdoor power. Next, you’ll need to decide what type of lighting and electrical fittings you would like to have in your garden room. This could include ceiling lights, wall lights, plug sockets, and even air conditioning units. Our team can advise you on the best options for your garden room and ensure that the electricity supply is installed to meet your needs. In some cases, it may be necessary to install an additional electrical circuit or to upgrade your existing electrical supply. Our experienced technicians will be able to advise you on the best course of action and ensure that the installation is carried out to the highest standards, in accordance with the relevant electrical regulations. Please note that any additional electrical work required for your garden room will be charged as a separate cost, so it’s important to factor this into your budget. If you have any concerns about the electricity supply for your garden room, our team will be more than happy to answer your questions and provide further advice.
- Absolutely; we’ve built countless bespoke garden rooms that meet the individual requirements of our clients. These have included wheelchair-friendly rooms, hot tub garden buildings, sauna and wet rooms, soundproofed garden rooms for musicians, hobby rooms, home offices and gyms. Our design team will be happy to discuss your requirements as part of your free no-obligation quote.
- Insulating a garden office floor can be quite a large and specialist job, so you will need the right equipment and skills. Or you can just leave it up to us. All of our garden rooms are insulated to the highest standard in the floors as well as the walls and ceilings, and we also use double-glazed glass to ensure you can use your garden room in comfort even in the coldest winter months. ““
- We normally use ground screws or concrete piles. This comprises of a series of piles in a grid system spanning the entire building. This is included in the cost of your building. Our piles normally go to depths between 300mm and 600mm. The depth is assessed by the base team on the day of installation, and on some occasions due to ground composition the piles may be shallower or deeper. If these aren’t appropriate for your garden, our construction team will use an alternative. Already have a base in place? We might be able to build on that if you’re confident it will be strong enough.
- Firestone EDPM is our standard roof option. It gives an excellent waterproof barrier to your garden roof structure and is specially designed for flat or low-sloped roofs. It is a durable rubber roofing membrane which is used worldwide. It has a life expectancy of more than 50 years with a 25 year weather security guarantee. For clients looking for green roof to blend in with their garden, there are two main choices, a sedum roof or a wild meadow roof. It sits on top of an EDPM roof, and is a great way to finish your garden room. From an aerial perspective, sedum roofs blend with your garden, are environmentally-friendly and give great insulation.
- Unfortunately, this is not an option with our garden rooms, and they are designed to be used in one place only. Not all our garden rooms are built on solid foundations, and all our rooms have a plastered and painted finish, so they are not removable. The plus side is that they are incredibly solid and are designed to last for many years. It is possible to deconstruct the garden room, however your estate agent will advise that it is a huge asset and focal point of the sale. The cost of relocating would outweigh a new room when the value added to the property is taken into account. In premium locations, the value added to the property can vastly outweigh the cost of our garden room. Estate agents will confirm this. We can always build you a new one.
- Our garden rooms have been designed to fit beneath the 2.5 metre limitations of the Permitted Development rules, this gives you an internal ceiling height of 2.2 mtrs at the front and sloping off to 2.150mtrs at the back, so in the majority of cases planning permission will not be required. For those of you who have space to locate your garden room at least 2 metres away from your boundaries, taller garden rooms are available. These provide increased ceiling height within your garden room without the need to apply for planning permission. We can extend the roof heights off all our rooms but this also requires full planning.
- We install high-quality Aluminium doors and windows. They are very secure with a multi-point locking euro lock system and a set of keys, extra available on request. The main choices of doors and windows are
- Bi-folds
- Sliding
- French with sides
- Pencil windows
- Corner windows
- Roof lanterns
We can also supply the best quality bespoke bi-fold hardwood doors, these are made to order and require a longer lead time.
- In the majority of cases we use SIP panels. Where extra weight is required – SIPs can be fabricated to suit any design of building, allowing architects the flexibility and creative freedom to create aesthetically pleasing designs.
Maintenance
- Yes, we always leave our buildings ready for you to move your furniture straight in. All frames and glass is thoroughly cleaned.
- Our garden room buildings are designed to last for at least 25 years and come with a 10-year structural guarantee. It’s important that you maintain the cladding on your room.

Site Survey
- Yes, and we’re sure you’ll agree that decision makers should be present! We’ll take a detailed examination of your space and go through everything you need to know, including size of garden room and access. At the end of your consultation with one of our lovely bunch, you’ll know the exact price your garden room will be – any specific alterations may need a quotation.
- Luckily our consultants are an imaginative bunch, so they’ll be able to work out where things will go without you having to do this first. You will need to level the ground before installation, but they’ll tell you exactly how much ground to remove and to what depth.
- Our consultants are very good at visualising, so you’ll be saved that physical labour. They’ll be able to tell you what site clearance actually needs doing – there’s no point digging up that huge conifer if you don’t need to! Your consultant will also let you know how much levelling should be done before our installation team arrive.
- Typically we will need a pedestrian path (1m wide X 2m high) to access the location. Our design consultant can assess the access at your onsite consultation and will advise if there is anything we might need changing. But don’t worry, we’re quite adaptable!
- We may be able to use an existing concrete slab as a base, but it depends on a few factors. For example, the concrete slab must be the correct size, free from cracks and a minimum of 6” deep. The concrete slab should also be level with the ground surrounding it. If it is too high, the garden building may exceed 2.5 metres and require planning permission.
- No, you don’t have to do your own clearance and groundwork for your garden room. At Into The Garden Room, we offer a full range of services, including clearance and groundwork, to make the process of installing a garden room as smooth and stress-free as possible. Our team has years of experience in preparing the ground for garden rooms and will take care of all the necessary steps, such as digging the foundation, laying the base, and installing utilities. Contact us to learn more about our services and how we can help you get your garden room up and running or get a quote today.
- Generally, there is not a site we cannot build in. Our buildings are constructed using two methods of construction, SIPs = Structurally Insulated Panels and Timber Frame construction, the panels and other materials we use for construction can be carried to difficult to access sites through or over most obstacles. We have erected buildings on sites where we had to carry materials through mid terrace houses,Down and up stairs and through windows, through first floor flats, over balconies, and many other hard to access locations. This will require a site visit to fully understand access, we always protect your property and driveway whilst we use for access and during the building process.
- The measurements are all external and dimensions are taken from the full length of timber, end to end. These measurements do not take into account any overhang dependent on your chosen building . For example, if a Room is listed as 4m x 3m and has an overhang of 0.5m its birds-eye measurements would be 4.5m x 3m. (Overhangs are stated on all profiles where applicable) We can provide drawings upon request.
- Yes we will
- A garden room extension is simply another name for a garden room. Normally, an extension is used to describe the process of adding an extra room onto a house or enlarging an existing room. Garden rooms, on the other hand, are completely separate from the house. However, they are often referred to as garden room extensions even though they are separate from the main building.
