FAQ’s
Everything you need to know about our garden rooms, the design process, planning and installation.
Design
- While we do not currently offer a completely soundproof solution for our garden rooms, we do offer a noise reduction pack that can help to reduce the transmission of sound through the walls, floors, and ceilings of the garden building. This pack includes sound-reducing insulation, a sound-reducing membrane, and acoustic glass. The insulation and membrane work together to effectively reduce the transfer of sound to approximately -45db, while the acoustic glass helps to reduce the transmission of sound through windows and doors. However, it is important to note that the acoustic glass is the least effective component of the noise reduction pack, and the more glass is included in your garden room, the less effective the pack will be at reducing noise. If you have any questions about our noise reduction pack or would like more information, please don’t hesitate to contact us.
- You can furnish your garden room any way you wish, just like you would a room in your home. The furniture you use depends on how you will use it. For example, you could add a desk, chairs and shelves for a garden office, or you could furnish it with comfy chairs and a sofa if you want to use it as a place to relax. ““
- Yes, we can easily include dividing walls or separate rooms in your bespoke garden room. We can create entirely separate rooms within your garden building using partition walls. These can be connected via a door, or you may want each room to only be accessible from outside. You can use these separate spaces for a wide range of purposes. For example, they may be useful if you require an extra area for the storage of tools, cycles, garden machinery or anything else. Or you might wish to create a separate room for working and one to relax in.
- Biophilic design is an architectural approach that allows you to experience/connect more closely with various aspects of nature, but from the sheltered comfort of your garden room. Numerous studies point to the benefits of connecting with nature to improve our sense of health and wellbeing, yet we spend much of our lives indoors. Our biophilic design approach considers natural light, shadows and fresh air in your garden room, right through to your view and using natural build materials. The result? A healthy, calm and productive space that creates a sense of harmony between your garden room and outside. By blurring the separation between inside and outside biophilic design is said to help reduce stress and improve/aid cognitive function, creativity well-being and healing – hugely important benefits as our lives continue to urbanise.
- Into the Garden Room works in partnership with Virtual Build to help you to create your ideal space by enabling you to visualise all aspects of your garden room design in detail long before the construction begins. We listen to your comments and work closely with you to help create your ideal room, tailored to your specific requirements. Virtual Build is headed by an architect and with over 30 years experience in architectural presentation in our team, we are able to use an array of tools and skills that have been developed to help you experience your room virtually. We strive to be at the forefront of our field of work by utilising the latest technologies and techniques. We understand that standard 2D drawings are limited in allowing you to visualise the room, so we create a fully immersive virtual reality experience that allows you to explore your room, examine every detail and ensure it is tailored to your specific desires. The proposed rooms can be viewed on phones, laptops and tablets or, for the full experience on a VR headset. We aim to make the experience as simple to use and easy to understand as possible. Firstly, a private webspace is created for each project, then within the app we combine both traditional 2D drawings and 3D models to allow you to seamlessly move between both visuals. We hope that you enjoy the experience of using our product and it allows you to get a true feel for your garden room.
- Painting a wooden summer house is a relatively straightforward task. All of our summer houses are painted for you in the colours you choose, so you won’t have to do anything. If you want to paint it yourself, however, you should do so on a clear day without rain. Make sure the timber is clean, then apply a wood preserver first. Then simply apply your chosen wood paint (or wood stain if you want a more natural finish). If you want to, you can apply a clear topcoat at the end. ““
- You can put anything you like into a garden room. You could use it as a garden office and put a desk, computer and file cabinets into it. Or you could use it as a games room complete with a pool table, dart board and sofa. We can even do the plumbing for you so you can fit a toilet or shower. It’s completely up to you!
- Garden rooms are at the top of the wishlist for many people right now because they are a fantastic way to make use of your garden. Our garden rooms are comfortable, stylish and can be used for a wide range of purposes. They last for many years and can be used all year around, so you can enjoy spending more time in your garden.
- Garden rooms are permitted developments, which means they don’t require planning permission as long as they do not go over a certain size. They must be single storey buildings, and the height of the eaves must be a maximum of 2.5 metres. If it has a dual pitched roof, the maximum overall height must be no more than 4 metres. If not, the maximum height is 3 metres. However, if it is located within 2 metres of the boundary of your property, the maximum height is 2.5 metres. In addition, it must be under 10m x 10m in size.
- We can take care of all the wiring for you if you want to plug in electrical devices like computers and WiFi routers. This is something we will discuss during the design stage so you can be sure you have enough sockets in all the right places to meet your needs. If you decide to do some wiring after the summer house is installed, it’s best to call an electrician.
Construction
- Our garden rooms are available in a wide range of sizes. But when it comes to the maximum size, there are limits before you need to consider planning permission. Garden rooms should be a maximum overall height of three metres, or four metres for a dual-pitched room. They should also be no larger than 10m2, and 2.5 metres is the maximum height of the eaves. There are other restrictions, and it may depend on the size of your garden, so ask us and we will let you know if you need planning permission.
- We spend between 6 and 8 weeks on the construction stage of our timber garden rooms. The construction phase involves laying the foundations, installing insulation, making it watertight, installing the plumbing and electrics, plastering and painting. A big job, but we’re sure you’ll love the final result. It’s a specialist task and one that we have mastered over the years. ““

- An indoor garden room is an interior room of your house that you convert into a garden filled with plants. You can build this in any spare room of your house, but perhaps a conservatory is best. It can take up as much or as little space as you want. Simply choose a style of garden, pick out the types of plants you want to grow and the amount of space you want to use, then start creating your garden based on your personal preferences.
- Building an underground room in your garden is a specialist task and one that you should only do with the right skills, experience and equipment. Underground constructions can be dangerous, so it’s best to leave it to the professionals. If you would like a high-quality garden room above ground, however, we would be more than happy to help you.
